The Belgian quarry yields two types of stone in two grades.  We ONLY buy the Selected Grade which is the best grade. The Blue Stone is a 4000 grit and the Yellow Coticule Stone is an 8000 grit. The Belgian Stones will cut all types of steel since garnet is harder than steel. Use these stones for all kinds of woodworking tools, knives, and straight razors.  We recommend only water spritzed on top of the stone to make the slurry.

Belgian Yellow Coticule Stones

These stones have a base of slate for added strength. They are not combination stones. The slate backing will not sharpen steel.

Natural Combination Stones

We occasionally receive a natural combination stone from the quarry that is yellow coticule on one side and blue on the other.  They are fairly rare and come from the spot where the yellow vein of coticule intrudes into the blue stone.  To my knowledge, they are the only known naturally occurring combination whetstone.  The 8"x3" size is $300 and the 6"x2" size is $160.  We occasionally receive an 8"x2" and that is priced at $220.  We also have, on occasion, a 4"x2" for $95. Call to check on available stock.    An 8"x1" is available as a special order for $115.

These natural combination stones are getting more difficult to come by and are not always in stock so call ahead to ask for availability of stock.

Belgian Bout Coticule

A "bout" is an odd-shaped stone. It may be triangular or trapezoidal or square. The Belgians waste no stone and the bout are used for smaller tools like gravers, veiners, chasing tools, chisels, etc. They are offered by amount of surface area rather than dimension.

I keep a bout in my medicine chest to give quick touch ups to my straight razor.  - Howard
The 12 sq. in. bout is the largest size and suitable for straight razor honing or for contouring for specific tools such as gouges or veiners.
12 sq in. coticule only is $135          12 sq. in natural combo $165 (these are very rare and we do have one in stock)

Splinters (eclats in Belgian) are slivers of coticule used by craftsmen to grind and polish in small places. Bladesmiths use them, for example, to get into inside corners and shoulders of straight knives and folding knives to remove grinding marks and polish the metal.

Set of 3 splinters $ 22.00

Multiform Blue Belgian stones are wedge-shaped with a conical section for curves. These would be used for gouges, curved plane irons, and other curved surfaces.

4" x 1.6" (100mm x 40mm) $ 25.00
6" x 2" (150mm x 50mm) $ 38.00

Wooden Boxes: These beautiful, durable beech boxes have rubber feet on the bottom.  The 6"x2" size has a leather strop on the top and they are $11 each. People often buy them empty for other stones they have on their bench or in their collection.  We also have wooden boxes with no strop for 8"x3", 8"x2", and bout stones. These boxes are $17 each and are imprinted with the Ardennes-Coticule logo. These boxes are highly recommended to help protect your investment in these fine stones.
